The “One Day” Title

“Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett was one of my favourite plays I, ahem, studied in college. In truth, I read an online summary about it the night before my exam and found same so interesting that I resolved to read it someday. And I did, around a year after I had left university. I did this with a lot of books that were required reading for my degree. For some reason when something is compulsory every fibre of my being does not want to do it; I don’t really know why.

And so, the title of my Substack is taken from Beckett’s play. The following quote specifically:

“One day, is that not enough for you, one day he went dumb, one day I went blind, one day we'll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we shall die, the same day, the same second, is that not enough for you? They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more.”

Why it Started

I have always enjoyed putting my thoughts down in words and sentences, and have been doing so since I first picked up a pencil. This Substack currently has three main sections, with a Notes section for quotes I like, and random thoughts about things.

One Day - this is somewhat of a travel blog, mainly based in Ireland, complete with my photography experiments along the way. This started as a means of exploring cities, towns, and villages around Ireland, and occasionally elsewhere, observing how they look today, talking to and photographing random people I meet, and learning a sprinkling of the local history. The aim is to try to understand the various nooks and crannies of the country as they were, and how they now are. These posts will always be free.

Weekly Musings - this is a semi-paid section containing posts that have a much more personal lilt.

Richard Runner - this is a section that will be mainly related to my running and my perpetual pursuit of a sub 3 hour marathon. I will write about races that I enter, dietary experiments, shoes, injuries, and anything else running related.

Why become a paid subscriber?

Paid subscriber content will be under the heading “Weekly Musings” and will be of a more personal vein and may be about a book I read, general thoughts on what is going on in the world or anything else I feel like committing to words and sentences :-). Subscribing gives me the incentive and time to continue creating content that you hopefully find helpful, interesting, or entertaining. However, I understand that many people do not wish to become paid subscribers and so there will be a “Buy me a coffee” button at the bottom of posts for people that would like to help keep this blog afloat. Further, comments are only open to paid subscribers.

One Day articles are about places and activities, mostly in Ireland, making creative photos of and talking to strangers, with a drizzle of history. Weekly Musings articles are about anything that happens to be going on in my noggin.
